Sunday Run Day

Sunday is the designated long-run day in our household as Saturday we’re usually feeling a bit jaded from the Friday night happy hour we celebrate on a weekly basis.  Okay, just joking about the feeling jaded part.  We have other schtuff to do on Saturday, so it works out best that we run long on Sunday.  And as today was Sunday, yes, it was long-run day!  But I’ll get to that in a bit…

Last Sunday was my first long-ish run since having knee pain during the Lake Sammamish Half Marathon.  I was so happy to finally hit the trail to test the waters.  But then I came upon this:

20160320_114159.jpg

This burning pile of trash was about 100 feet from the trail.  Yes, I climbed an embankment and possibly trespassed in order to get this picture, but are you freaking kidding me?!  There was an area so thick with smoke on the trail, I had to breathe through my shirt.  And when you’ve been running, that’s not pleasant!  However, burning trash is apparently legal.  Can’t smoke a cigarette in a public park, but by damn, get that heaping pile of trash burning so all the health nuts on the trail who want a breath of fresh air can’t get any!  I wasn’t impressed.  And the City of Lake Stevens didn’t care.  Whatever.  Okay, rant over.  Sorry.  Just had to.

Anyway, last week’s run was pain-free, so I’m back in the running business.  James and I think we may have figured out what was causing my knee pain… I like to sit with my feet and legs tucked up underneath me.  Sometimes it tweaks the position of the knee, hence, knee pain. I’ve had to force myself to sit properly and it’s not been easy to attempt to break that life-long habit.

The skunk lilies are starting to bloom on the trail.  Just wait until they get full size… I’ll do a comparison side-by-side.  They’re beautiful, BUT, everything now completely smells like their namesake.  Things that make you go hmmm….

20160325_215936.jpg

Probably TMI, but the above was only 5 days’ worth of running gear; I got behind on laundry, sue me.  I’ve explained to James that he no longer is allowed to double up his layers no matter how cold it is, and if he decides to do a bike ride and run all in the same day, he has to wear the same cycling shorts and cycling shirt to run in.  (Haha… you’ll probably only understand how funny that is if you know one or are an avid cyclist.)  😀

Apparently the Easter Bunny visited our house last night and brought me an Easter basket.  And by me, I really mean AJ.  Mind you, I’ve helped him out quite a bit with those jelly beans and robin’s eggs.  He devoured the Peeps first and foremost… yep, that’s my boy, no mistake about it.  (Yes Peeps are gross!  They’re supposed to be gross!  But they’re a tradition, and you just don’t mess with tradition!)

This gorgeous guy was seen on my run today at the soccer fields.  Oh Hey!  Why’d the chicken cross the road?  To attack me, of course!  Okay, kidding… first of all, it’s a rooster.  Second of all, it was raining and all the worms were out… so he was just getting his protein for the day.

Weird weather day today.  I wanted to get up at the crack of dawn and get my run out of the way so I could have my mandatory body shutdown for an hour then get on with it.  But ’twas not to be.  I kept waiting and waiting and waiting for the downpour to stop.  Finally at about noon (3 hours after my originally planned departure time), the heavens took a break and I headed out.  I went to the soccer fields to run laps because a thunderstorm was predicted and I needed to be able to have a quick getaway plan… I don’t do thunder and lightning.

20160327_145021.jpgRound and round I went… through sun, light rain, hard rain, and even hail.  I was super happy to have restroom facilities right there… I made use of them no less than 3 times.  It was also nice having my car right there… it had all my water and towels and GU and what-not stashed away.  Handy dandy.  Jamesy was running his 20 miler today, and he met up with me and ran about 20 laps or so (one loses track when one is running around in circles).  I had all his extra gear in the car as well.  It was a great setup!

Sheba

Tragedy ensued smack dab in the middle of my run.  I got a call from a hysterical AJ… Sheba and Meeps were fighting and killing each other (no worries… I paused my watch). Home I drove… (thank heavens I was at an actual location that I could drive home and wasn’t 10 miles deep into the trail…) and then I separated the two cats.  No harm, no foul, although tonight, Sheba is nowhere to be found.

Back I went to resume my run and my built-in aid station for James and I.  He was still going round and round.  Finally, finally, finally we were nearing the end of our long runs.  He still had 5 miles to go.  I called it a day at some point.

20160327_191055.jpg

I felt the bunny ears were appropriate for today.  That’s me above finishing up my last half mile. (Next week’s run will be further… should I do 11, or should I do 12?  Hmmmm…)

Salt Lake City Half-Marathon in 20 days.  Good gawd I’m going to hurt after this next half.  But a song came on during my run today that reminded me what I’m all about…

2 Legit 2 Quit…  which would also be my selection for Jamesy’s Motivational Music Monday this week.  Go check out his pick for the week and even add your own.  We all need to pump up our playlists… 10 to 20 miles is a long way to run without something kicking your ass into gear.

On that note, Happy Easter!  Hope you have a fabulous week!

Salt Lake City Coming Up!

I’m procrastinating going out for my long run today as the weather is never good here on a Sunday, it’s always pouring of rain.  This is what I’m training for now, 20 days away. Super nice bling.  Yes, I train for the bling… and you know this.  If you enjoy reading recaps of how training is going, check out Jamesy’s most recent post.  He gives a great summary.

While I only have 10 miles to conquer today, he’s going for the big 20 to 22.  Wish him luck… he’s going to need it in this weather!  🙂

It’s been several weeks since the last marathon training update and, behold, in just 3 weeks we will be heading to Salt Lake City, Utah for marathon number 2 of 2016 and state number 6. So, time for a marathon training checkin. The past few weeks have been crazy busy, up and down, and wreaked havoc on my…

Bieber Love

The following conversation transpired between me and my husband earlier while we had the radio on and were catching up on stuff:

ME:  I think I’ve heard this song about 5 times already tonight.

JAMES:  At least.  I actually kind of like it.  Who sings it?

ME:  Justin Bieber.

JAMES:  I f***ing hate it.

Our son can’t stop laughing about the fact his Dad is a Bieber fan.

WHAM!

What time is it?!!  It’s time for Jamesy’s Motivational Music Monday!  It’s time to search those playlists and post what floats your boat!!  One day James will actually create the linky link thing, but in the meantime, put your video link in the comment section on his site so we can all see what makes you happy, gets you running or walking, or just plain puts a spring in your step!

When James told me he was going to post a rap song (you have to visit his site to actually see what rapper gets that metal head out and running), there was one song that came to my mind instantly. Now, most of you know that Buble is my boy; however, back in the eighties, George Michael was above and beyond my favorite of favorites.

Like most American kids/tweens/teenagers, I watched American Bandstand and Soul Train every Saturday morning (after Bugs Bunny, of course), and this is where I first saw Wham!  They performed this song (Wham Rap!), they were dressed exactly how they were dressed in the video, and they even danced the same way.  Ahhh, such entertainment!  🙂

This song is full of energy and still gets my blood pumping and my legs moving!  It’s nice that not everything changes.  Watch the video.  If you know the song, see if it doesn’t bring a smile to your face after all these years.  And if you don’t know it, I would still bet the video puts a smile on your face… if for no other reason than how fabulous the clothes and hair were back then! (George is sporting a tail, hehe)  Enjoy!!

Weekend Rambles

Ramble… to talk or write at length in a confused or inconsequential way.  It’s what I do best, so I’ll begin.

dr evil

My running has been slim this week.  In case you forgot, I hurt my knee running the Lake Sammamish Half Marathon (but I finished anyway, so yay).  You can read about that herehere, and here (all 3 “here’s” take you to the same place, but if you want to read about it someplace else, try here).  So I’ve been resting and healing.

I’m kind of sad that I’m not still streaking, but the races and the bling are way more important than the streaking.  In all reality, I think I just like saying “streaking;” it sounds so indecorous (haha, I had to look that one up).  Anyway, I’ve been out on a couple of runs this past week… well, actually, one was on the treadmill, one was running laps at the soccer park, and then a good old fashioned trail run happened Friday!  By the end of my run on Friday, I felt I had worked all the nigglies out, but we shall see what Sunday’s long run brings.

Four weeks from today, I’ll be running the SLC Half-Marathon.  I really don’t time for the nigglies right now.

New subject… know anyone who is passive aggressive?  I liken being passive aggressive to being in junior high school… there’s not an ounce of maturity associated with passive aggressive tendencies, regardless if the person is 60 years old.  I’m having the extreme displeasure of dealing with one of those right now.  I have no choice but to completely ignore her responses and take what she says at face value, and only face value.  I get the hidden meaning behind the things she says, but then if I acknowledged any of it, I would be feeding the beast.  Not gonna do it. Unfortunately this is not a social relationship, so I can’t just put the good old block on her or “unfriend” her.

James and I just had this conversation (please re-read definition of rambling):

JAMES:  I think I’ll go for a bike ride.

ME:  How far are you going?

JAMES:  Probably about 10 miles, maybe 20, but probably 10.

ME:  (singing) Your ass is gonna hurrrrrrrt…

ME:  And you’re going to run after that?

JAMES:  Yes.

ME:  I think I’ll go take a nap.

lion sleeps tonight

Motivational Music Monday — Walk!

It’s time for Jamesy’s MMM linkup at 50 in 50 Marathon Quest, calling forth for all motivational or not-so-motivational music to be posted for those of us in need of some new or different types of sound.  Go visit his site and post a rockin’ good (or bad) song in the comments!

He’s crunching a bit this week (courtesy of our son… seriously, go check it out), so I thought maybe I’d follow suit.

Many many moons ago, back when AJ was a baby, James and I would watch Metal Mania on VH1 and kind of play a little game to it (AJ was a baby, so he slept through all that noise).  Anyway, we’d guess what was up next, rate the songs on a scale, make bets, and so on and so forth… you know, stuff that every normal set of new parents do when their baby is sleeping.

I’m a Michael Buble type of girl, so heavy metal was not my thing.  I really only watched it for all the great hair bands from the ’80s.  I’d become disgusted when Pantera, Type O Negative, Motorhead, Megadeth, Metallica, etc., would come on… I hated the crunch, and the noise, and the complete lack of music that made these artists millions of dollars.

Fast forward 10 years… most of these artists are now on at least one of my many playlists in some form or another.  One of my… favorites… has been Walk by Pantera.  I’m sure there’s some deep, dark, hidden meaning behind this song that I have yet to figure out… all I know is that I like to play it while I’m attemping Mo Fo Hill… it actually pumps me up and gets the blood moving.

So, without further adieu, I present Walk…  enjoy!  😛

Did you ever watch the classics on VH1?  Do you have a favorite song from the “classic” era? One of my favorites was Unskinny Bop by Poison… Bret Michaels had THE most gorgeous lipstick!

Got Coffee? Echoes Of My Neighbourhood #13

Seattle is a huge coffee mecca, with its biggest coffee roasters being Starbucks, Tully’s, and Seattle’s Best.  It is said that there are 35 coffeehouses per 100,000 people.  There are 4 drive-thru coffee stands no more than 3 miles from my house.  Here are 3 of them.  This sensation is lost on me as I don’t drink coffee.

Even the bling for Rock ‘n’ Roll Seattle in 2014 was a coffee cup.

(yeah, shameless plug, I know, :D)

I am joining Jacqueline Oby-Ikocha from A Cooking Pot and Twisted Tales for her series, “Echoes of My Neighbourhood,” where she challenges us all to share a photo of bits and pieces of wherever you are at any point in time.

Are drive-thru coffee stands the norm where you live, or is this just a Seattle thing?

Cancercize with Renee

renee fearless

I totally pilfered this from Renee’s Facebook Page. The ring says “fearless.”

I have a friend who was diagnosed with breast cancer last November.  She is also a blogger here on WordPress… The Revenge Wogger.  I know and love her as Renee.  She started her blog as an anonymous avenue to document her “revenge wogging” as she had plans to overtake a friend in a particular race they do together every year.  That race is coming up in May.  Cancer has detoured her for a little while… but only for this year.

Renee had a double mastectomy in January.  Thankfully she’s starting to recover from that surgery, but now she starts chemotherapy on March 17th.  Before cancer got in the way, she was a Zumba instructor.  That’s been put on hold as well.  However, it has been said that one way to beat the fatigue that chemotherapy sends your way is to exercise.  Renee wants to help others who are going through the same thing, so she’s started a YouTube channel called Cancercize with Renee B.  Her plans are to post exercise videos on a regular basis while she’s going through the chemotherapy to help herself as well as others dealing with cancer, showing that, yes, it can be done, nice and easy.

Cancer seems to affect everyone.  Around the same time that Renee told me she had it, my brother died from it.  Chances are, you know someone right now who is going through this or who has gone through this.  If you do, share this link with them.  Maybe they’ll be grateful just knowing that they are not alone.  Maybe they’re looking for some easy-going exercises just to get them through the chemotherapy until they hit it hardcore again.  You never know.

As for next year, May 2017, I’m very much looking forward to watching one particular wogger take out her sweet, sweet revenge.  Bwahaha…

Blast From The Past

As I was pondering the plight of… (oooo, alliteration)…

As I was pondering the plight of my pained patella (hehe), I started thinking about the ’80s and ’90s when I was in the best shape of my life and how I never would have had such a ridiculous injury, or pain.  (Don’t even go there with the age thing… even if it was 25 years ago). So, I was thinking to myself, hmmm, what was it I did differently back then that I don’t do now?! And then I realized… it has to be all those awesome VHS workout tapes I did religiously.  (For the young ‘uns reading this, VHS tapes were what we… cultured… people used to watch movies on before DVDs or streaming).

So I went on a treasure hunt in my garage.  Hey!  Looky what I found!  A whole slew of old tapes I used to work out to!  Anyone care to take a trip down memory lane with me?

20160309_184615.jpg

Kathy Smith’s Fat Burning Workout — I loved this one.  I plopped it in the VCR no less than 3 times a week. This is probably one of the first HIIT workout tapes out there, which isn’t surprising as Kathy Smith is the fitness guru of the ’80s and ’90s (well, her and Jane Fonda, but we’re not talking about Jane right now).  Lots of lunges and squats (see, focused on knee and hip strength… she knew what she was doing).

20160309_185151.jpg

Then there was Donna Richardson.  Boy was she ever spunky!  Loved her too, and I did this one (which came out in 1994) whenever I needed a change up from Kathy.

20160309_185601.jpg

For years, I combined my aerobics with lifting weights, so I would buy Muscle and Fitness Magazine.  Anyone remember Cory Everson?  She was a champion weightlifter (Ms. Olympia, Arnold’s female counterpart), and she even had a role in Jean-Claude Van Damme’s movie, Double Impact.  Anyway, she was smart and got on the workout video bandwagon.  I lifted weights so I had to get it (1992).  I did this tape at least 3 times a week as well.  Cory Everson – Get Hard… the title says it all.

20160309_190839.jpg

I can’t leave out Victoria Johnson!  Holy dancer Batman!  I wanted to groove just like her!  In her Technifunk tape, she made a fun go of all those fabulous ’90s dances… like the Cabbage Patch, the Running Man, Ho Hey, etc.  Great practice for going out clubbing!

20160309_192802.jpg

I have about 10 or 15 more tapes out in the garage, but I think I’m seeing a pattern here… I need to get back to basics with my ’80s and ’90s VHS workout tapes, get that knee back in shape, then see how far that gets me down the trail! Woo hoo!  I’m excited!!  Now then… anyone got a VCR I can borrow?  Anyone?  Anyone at all?
