Detox Sucks
The holiday celebrations are over now as mum-in-law Janet has gone back to the UK. No more debauchery for us… we have races coming up… all… summer… long. With the first one being this Saturday. And by debauchery, I mean this:
Well, at least until Saturday night after Rock ‘N’ Roll Seattle, then it’s Mexican Food and karaoke!
Plantar Fasciitis
I haven’t been brutally honest with everyone about my foot health. After running SLC in April, I developed heel pain. And then I got the flu. And I was bed-bound for a week. And when I finally was able to get out of bed, I couldn’t stand on my feet because of the pain. Holy wow! So I’ve been hating life this past month (not really, but you know what I mean), and this is my new norm:
Ice baths. And rolling. And ice packs nearly every hour. And tape. And ibuprofen. A LOT of ibuprofen. I have good days and I have bad days, but I’m hoping for a good day on Saturday. I’m still going to participate in the race, and I am risking a DNF, but I just don’t have it in me to quit a race before I even start. I’ve tried 2 different types of shoe inserts and have a completely different type on the way now. At this point, it certainly can’t hurt. So stay tuned… will she finish or will she DNF?! (spoiler alert: she will finish)
Graduation Day
And last but not least, my baby boy has now graduated from the 5th grade and is on to the middle school, although he looks like he should probably be in high school. We went to dinner the other night and we asked for a children’s menu. The hostess was confused. She looked behind us to see if we had a young child or if she missed counting somebody. I had to explain to her that the kid towering over her was only 11. Mind blown.
Anyway, what proud mom doesn’t want to show off her child’s accomplishments?! So here ya go… scenes from today (and he should be paying me big money for not posting the video of him #singingnotsinging).

This is his 5th grade teacher. She was in the 5th grade the year he was born, in 2004. Anyone feel old yet?
Cheers!! Have a great rest of your week!!
love all of it…and a great spoiler alert 🙂 Cheers!

Some spoiler alerts are good! 😀

I hope you DNF if necessary. It’s not about the race, it’s to be able to chase after your ‘baby’ boy in years to come. Can’t believe he is only 11!

No worries… if I have too much pain, I will DNF. I’m just super stubborn, and it’s going to take a lot of pain to knock me down, especially as I signed up for this race over a year ago. And I know right!! I think that child of mine amazes me every day with how grown up he looks!! He’s not even an official teenager yet!! (the attitude yes, in years no, lol) 😀

Glad to hear, I am just worried and want you to run forever 😉 wish you the best experience and that it holds up!
It must be crazy to watch him grow up. 11 means you still got puberty coming up? (I have less clue about kids than math).

That’s why I’m going to channel you this Saturday, hehe! I’m going to follow your tactics and hopefully it will help me! Regardless, I’m going to give what you do a try anyway as I think it’s awesome!
And AJ is actually in the midst of starting puberty, hence the attitude, lol. Yes, it really is something to watch him grow! I look at him and wonder where my little boy went! 😀

I should be perfectly channelable on Saturday during your race! Probably in a post-chimney-discovery-stuffed-with-baba-ganoush-haze 😀 Is there a thing where we can track you?
I followed AJ’s blog – will be interesting to see his view. Must be so cool to be a gaming teenager nowadays with all that computer power 😀

Oooo, you’re doing the chimney on Saturday! I can’t wait to see! There is a way to track me, I have to figure it out. If you do the twitter thing, I often send my Garmin live tracking to twitter which you can see where I am at any point in the race. But I think you may be sleeping while I’m racing, lol.
That is super kind of you to follow AJ’s blog! He’s not kept up on it, but hopefully now it’s the summer holiday, maybe he’ll write more (or at least some, lol). He wants to be a game designer when he grows up, and I just can’t keep up with his knowledge of tech stuff (sometimes neither can his Dad, hahaha).

I had a game dev company before I went to Ireland. Will be cool to watch the future gen 🙂 if he has any too techy/geeky questions he can ask me, I might find the time to answer. Found you on Twitter!

AJ really is quite tall!
I’m hoping the race won’t be as bad as you think. It might be that the race isn’t but it hurts a lot afterwards.
All the aches & pains of being active — they suck — BIG time!

I know right!! I thought that to myself as well… “I never hurt like this BEFORE I started running,” hehe! I think you’re right about the afterwards… I’ll get through the race fine but if I sit down afterwards anywhere, I’m going to need a bucket of ice. 😀

My ankle still bothers me on & off, it’s very annoying, but thankfully it doesn’t bother me on the run.
I’ll definitely be thinking of you this weekend!

I had plantar fasciitis after Cap City half last year. My wife and her friend Dr Deanna Osborne who does natural remedies got me on Arnicare gel. Rub it on outside and fish oil supplements for the inside. I bought Arnicare gel at a natural foods store. Think it was two for 15 or something like that. I didn’t get through the second before I was healed.

Thank you!! Yes, fabulous!! I will get some!! We actually use Arnicare at the wildlife clinic, so I’ve applied it a couple of times to my feet, but not regularly like you did. I’ll let you know how it works for me after some time! I’ll even do the fish oil! I’m all for natural remedies! 🙂 (Finally, some hope, thank you!)

I was doing it like hour upon hour for a week and then kept doing it for a month or so. Also lots and lots of stretching. Like downward dogs and sitting with legs out and pulling back on toes or on edge of a step and lowering my heel

Okay, wonderful! I will definitely do all those things!! Thank you for the great tips!!

Hope it works. I liked it better when my knee hurt than my plantar fascitis.

5th grade graduation…way to go! On to the excitement of middle school.
And ouch on the PF. I have it off and on. I notice it flares up when I wear certain non running shoes. Hope you can finish the race. I have always been able to finish when I’ve raced with PF, just have the help of Advil! Good luck!

Thanks Rebecca!! See, that’s why I won’t let it stop me, as everyone still runs with it, 😀

I hope you’ve recovered since…sounds like you’ve been dealing with a lot. Don’t worry about AJ’s size too much…the other day when I ordered drinks at a restaurant the waitress brought my 10 step daughter an adult sized glass. (kids meals come in kid sized cups)….so I had to ask “Am I going to have to pay extra for that?” lol

Oh that’s hilarious about your step-daughter, and I certainly don’t blame you for asking! Not fully recovered yet, but I am stepping up treatment and it is getting much better, so yay for that! Nothing worse than foot pain, I’ll tell ya!!
