Happy Birthday!

I noticed a few of my favorite bloggers celebrated their birthday in January!

At Seek The Best Blog, there were lots of birthdays being celebrated over there!  We also had Brian from Bonnywood Manor singing some tunes!  And then Ben at Running Of The Books celebrated his with a run, yummy food, and some great wine!  And we have yet to learn how Susan from Woman on the Ledge will celebrate (beginning of February/end of January… you know, same thing).

I wish you all a big…

But I have to confess… now that the secret is out over at 50 in 50 Marathon Quest, I celebrated a birthday last week as well.  The big 5-0.  We don’t put those two numbers together because they’re just not pretty.  We call this birthday the “one day older than yesterday” birthday. Because I’m still coming to terms with that ridiculous number 5.

However, that being said, I have some mighty big goals to celebrate that mighty big number.  I wanted to do everything 5-0 this year… you know, 50K ultra, actually tackle my 50-mile bike ride, maybe even try doing 50 situps… 🙂

Can’t say I’ll hit the 50K, but I have faith I’ll hit the 50-miler at some point this summer (we’re bringing the trainer inside so my sit bones can get used to my saddle while the rain continues to… rain).  But… okay… I’m going to put it out there… the real goal is the Marine Corps Marathon in October (my very first 26.2)*.  There’s a caveat to that though… by the time we have to enter the drawing in March, my pace has to be below a certain time.  So, I’m diligently getting up stupid early every morning, hitting the treadmill and running intervals to speed my slow ass up.  I’ll keep you posted.

In the meantime, I decided to follow Ma Allie‘s recipe for baking a cake and came up with this:

Okay, I’m kidding… it wasn’t Ma Allie’s fault, she’s a wonderful cook; I wish I had her talent.  It’s me, all me… just another one of my many cooking disasters, made the weekend before my birthday. Hence, the beautiful, store-bought, chocolate pie above.  My family are so loving and forgiving!

One final note, and I’m going to jump the gun and spill the beans here, Queen with Adam Lambert are coming to Seattle in July.  Tickets went on sale today, and we snatched a couple of those bad boys up!!  Adam may not be Freddie, but I think he’s going to rock the house, and I can’t wait!

And, to all of us struggling with that ugly number 5, this is for us…

  • Did you hit the half-century mark recently?  If so, does the number matter to you?
  • Any other January birthdays I missed?
  • Who else is putting in for the MCM??

*To SRG… we considered coming your way like we discussed, but it’s not feasible this year… THIS year, 😀

I’m still reeling a bit from my own 5-0 a few years ago. At the same time, this half-century mess is starting to feel a bit nice and familiar. There’s still some denial, but it’s all in the positive outlook and the proper attitude, and you have both. Happy Belated Birthday! (And thanks for the shout-out.)

I slipped under the 5-0 radar (quite) a few yearsa go now, while on holiday with my 2 daughters in Ibiza. Nobody knew (thankfully, otherwise the compère might have had me on stage during the show!) I find that I feel much older when my children have their birthdays, the elder one will be 3-0 this coming July, so THAT will make me feel REALLY old! But, age it’s just a number….
Good luck with your marathon training and toughening up those sit bones – that’s the hardest part about cycling.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAULA!!!
And thanks for the ‘shout out!’
You look absolutely gorgeous so I can dig the whole, ‘one year older than yesterday’ thing!
It suits you much better 🙂

Adam Lambert with Queen, you say?
    YAAASSSS!
Now I have a serious urge to visit my bestie in Seattle this summer!

Oh, by the way, Ma Allie told me to thank you for sharing her baking methods!
She also told me that Freddie Mercury loves her recipes!
He’s at her ‘place’ all the time!
    LOL!!!

Happy Birthday to all the January babies and especially to you Paula. The big 5-0 passed for me a few years back and it was a bit tough for me too, but after a few months I moved on! It’s just a number, it has no control over you 🙂

MCM is big…but you can do it! and I’d love to see Adam & Queen…can’t wait to hear how great it was!

First off, happy belated birthday! 50 didn’t bother me (other than the fact that I was all by myself).I’m turning 55 — still doesn’t bother me. Talk to me again at 80, but you’re as young as you feel, as they say!

How exciting about MCM! Good luck!

Just stop & think about it — do you really feel any differently on your birthday than you did the day before? Attaching that much importance to a number . . . not good in any areas of our lives!

Will I feel differently about 60? I doubt it. Maybe it has to do with being the baby of the family. Everyone else gets old before me. 🙂

When you’re a numbers geek, yes, numbers matter. And numbers are very important in many areas of our life… PRs, pace, heart rate, pulse, blood pressure, any lab value… numbers are very important.
But at the end of the day, I’m really just joking. I’m the baby too. My sister is a year older than me and she always buffers the number change. No, I don’t feel any different than I did yesterday, and I’m not so sure I feel any different from 10 years ago.

Happy belated birthday, Paula. Yeah, turning 50 is something that is crazy particularly when you are only feeling like you are in your 20s. I turned 51 today. Thanks for mentioning me. I think you are well on your way to a successful year. Run well!

    Dear Paula,
I’m so sorry I missed wishing you a happy birthday! I hope it was as wonderful a day as you are a person and that you had some of that cake to savor a little after your day. 🙂
My brother has his b-day in January. it’s a pretty cool month to celebrate a new life-year with.
Congrats on the milestone b-day! Here’s to many happy returns!

Happy belated birthday Paula. I felt the same way a few months back when I hit 4-0. It just feels strange sometime lol. But hey, at least you still look good and in good health. What more can us women ask for, right? lol Best of luck with the Marine Corp Marathon. I’m sure you can do it!! 😀
