Good News Stories

Rob over at My God, My Music, My Life, has put forth the challenge to find some stories that are different from the usual doom and gloom we’re too used to seeing in the daily news.  And I’m always up for a happy story.  It is my hope that people one day realize that hate does not change things… if you want things to be different, start from within.

Joe Bartley, an 89-year-old widower in Paignton, Devon, placed an ad in a local newspaper looking for work to “save him from dying of boredom.”  The ad went global and landed him a new job at a local cafe.

Joe retired from his last job as a college cleaner 6 years ago.  He had previously served as a wireless operator with the 6th Airborne Divisional Signals in Palenstine after the war.  Once word got out about the ad, he was inundated with job offers.  He had never had a job interview before and was “over the moon” about acing his first one.

Joe hopes to work around 20 hours a week waiting, cleaning, and preparing veggies at the cafe near his home.  He is even keen on a bit of overtime.  One female customer, who is 75, said: “I’m looking forward to seeing him – I’ve just given him a kiss.  He is a dear old boy.”

So sweet!  Perhaps he will find love again too…

Ben Ellis, a high school teacher who was battling cancer, was so loved by his students they turned up in droves to sing to him outside his home.  He was left fighting back tears at the window of his bedroom as 400 children serenaded him with song of worship, Holy Spirit You are Welcome Here.

The entire student body from the Nashville area high school where he taught, including parents and faculty, loaded up buses and cars to worship with him at his home.  Ellis lost his battle with cancer just 10 days later.

Second grade students at a school in Topeka, KS, had just finished reading a book about some kids who find a stranded sheepdog with a broken leg, when the teacher happened upon a Facebook post from the Helping Hands Humane Society that she knew the kids would love.  The post was about an Australian shepherd that had been taken to the shelter after a local vet found him on the side of the road with a broken leg.

The HHHS were asking for donations for $400 to pay for the surgery needed for Ryker.  The 2nd-grade students were compelled to help Ryker in any way possible, so the teacher sent a note home to their parents.

They came back the next day and the kids had raised over $450.  The shelter was thrilled and knew it had to do something to thank these sweet children.  So the shelter and Ryker headed off to the school with the intention of surprising the 2nd-grade class, and they didn’t disappoint.

“The kids’ faces were priceless,” said the teacher.  “They all got to get a picture with him… and the shelter was nice enough to make little prints of Ryker’s paws.”

The shelter says it has received over 100 applications from families hoping to adopt him.

Good begets good…

A woman celebrating her 80th anniversary in the same job says that retirement isn’t in the cards – as she still loves her work.

Elisabeth Davis may be 99 years old, but she’s not letting a little thing like age get in the way of keeping active and entertained as she heads to the offices of Culver Academies every day in her role as secretary and says that she has always been happy at the job.

After she left Culver High School as a student in 1935, Elisabeth took her first job as assistant to the dean in Culver Academies and has been there ever since.  She still uses a typewriter to get the job done, with the school ordering ribbon and parts specially.

Elisabeth, 1931

In 1936 when Elisabeth started at Culver Academies:

  • The Munich Olympics were held and Jessie Owens made history with four gold medals — much to the anger of Adolf Hitler.
  • In the UK, King Edward VIII abdicated to marry Wallis Simpson.
  • The Spanish Civil War started.
  • Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Time was a cinema hit, and people were listening to A Fine Romance by Fred Astaire and Up The Wooden Hill To Bedfordshire by Vera Lynn.
  • FDR was president of the U.S.

Elisabeth says:  “I just live day by day.  If there comes a time when I feel like it, I will, but I don’t feel like retiring.”

I Can’t Drive… 55!

This is also my bestie from high school, Mindy (on the right, 1987… no giggling at the funny old pictures).

We were as close as sisters and were always there for each other no matter what.  And the trouble we used to get in… well, that’s a story for another day.

Graduation, Baby! 1985

Anyway, just before our senior year of high school started, Sheryl’s dad won a car.  Not just any car, but a 1985 Dodge Daytona Turbo Z and the very first one to come off the line.  The license plate read CAR-001.

ps_2010_10_13___09_07_25

It had a factory stereo in it that could blast the ice off the windows.  Turn up that bass!  Which we did… often.  You could hear Sheryl coming from a block away.

One day we decided to go test just how sporty this little car actually was.  We went across the river to the backroads of rural Graham County, Arizona, where we had miles upon miles of empty road with all kinds of hills and twists and turns.  Sheryl managed to exceed 80 mph on one stretch… keeping in mind that this was back in the day when the legal speed limit on every major highway was only 55 mph, so hitting 80+ was a big deal.  If we would have been caught, Sheryl surely would’ve had her license revoked.

Needless to say, Sheryl acquired many speeding tickets during the next couple of years.  It’s a really good thing her brother was a cop.

The following was a song we would crank up in that sporty little car of hers with the kick-ass stereo whenever we would cruise the backroads because it was oh-so-true. This is also my pick for James’s Motivational Music Monday this week.  After all these years, it still gets the blood and the heart pumping.

Sadly, Sheryl died in 2012.  However, 30+ years later, Mindy and I are still in touch.

In My Mind’s Eye…

Ever wonder what people are thinking?  Yeah, me too.  The following is kinda like my week in review, per a few of my personal thoughts… things I probably would never say out loud.  Except to James. And sometimes I still am able to surprise him by the off things that run through my brain…

wp-1487557277849.jpg

My pie is leaking! Why is my pie leaking?! (The child finished it off regardless.)

  • Where’d all these dishes come from?  I just did the dishes.  Why is the sink full 15 minutes later? No one is ever allowed to eat again.  No more cooking, no more eating, no more dishes. Problem solved.  Oh wait, we can eat out.  That’ll work.  (Didn’t happen, and the sink continues to produce dirty dishes.)
  • Surprise, surprise… another cleavage shot.  I’m so tired of all the cleavage selfies.  Are you in that much need of attention?  Get a dog. (No, really… do these women even know what “self-respect” means?)
  • Why are you coming up behind me so fast?  Are you late?  You should plan your time better. Dude!  You’re too close!  Here, let me slow wayyyy down… (The driver behind me got the message loud and clear and backed off.)
  • B**ch!  Bring that owl to us now before I call the cops!  (Federally protected bird.  The lady was hemming and hawing about not having time to bring it to the rescue center even though it had been in her possession for over 12 hours already with a broken wing.  I didn’t have to use profanity; I flat out begged her and appealed to her sense of decency.  She found someone right away to bring us the owl.  And that’s why I make the big bucks… hahahaha)
  • Dongle.  What a stupid word.  Who came up with that stupid word?  “Hold on while I grab my dongle.”  Seriously?!  (I ordered a bluetooth USB dongle and still can’t get over that stupid term.)
  • I promise to never ever eat fruit and nuts before a run again, if I can just make it through this one without having to crawl.  (I didn’t have to crawl.)
  • Would it be wrong for me to ground my child from his PS4 just so I can use it to play the newest Kingdom Hearts game?  (A video game I’ve played from the moment it was first launched, only for the PlayStation.  I have been waiting for-ev-er for AJ to save up enough money for a PS4 so I can continue to play this game.  He graciously told me I could play it anytime if I stored my credit card number to his PlayStation account… I think I prefer the grounding method.)

Have a happy week!

So Much Love!

Ya’all are simply amazing!  Love is all over Word Press today for Valentine’s Day!  Songs, poems, letters, recipes, stories… such a positive atmosphere!

I’m especially enjoying all the music!  I follow quite a few blogs who love their music just as much as I, and a few songs have popped up over the past few days that I haven’t heard or have forgotten about. If you are a music lover, go check out some of these blogs:

All these blogs offer more than just music, and if I’ve left anyone out, I apologize.  Sometimes my Reader and my email trip me up.

So to all my fellow music lovers, not only is this my choice for MMM this week, this is also for you…

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Sneaky Pete

Back in January, I was trying to mask the torture of treadmill running by streaming a TV show on my Kindle.  As I was streaming from an Amazon device, I came across all the Amazon shows and found “Sneaky Pete,” read the description, and thought, yeah, that might work.

Side note here… James and I do not watch TV.  We cannot commit the time it takes in watching a series, so we stick with the occasional movie, “Frasier” reruns, and a true crime series every now and again… all of which require zero emotional commitment.  We also love a good alien documentary as well (but that’s another post).

Anyhoo….

I decided to watch “Sneaky Pete.”  If you haven’t read the description or seen previews, it’s about a con artist (Giovanni Ribisi) who gets out of prison, goes into hiding, and assumes someone else’s identity, basically living this other person’s life.  Okay, it’s a bit more detailed than that, but I think you get the idea.

Anyone remember Giovanni Ribisi?  He was that dorky little kid on “My Two Dads” back in the late ’80s.  It took me a long time to remember where I’d seen him before (besides being Phoebe’s little brother on “Friends“).

Giovanni also played the kid brother to Nicholas Cage in “Gone in 60 Seconds.”

Sooo…

After that first episode, I was hooked.  It took me 3 weeks to convince James to sit down and watch it with me as I thought he would like it as well.  I was right.  And James is a hard sell, believe you me.

The show’s co-creator, executive producer, and evil villain is played by Bryan Cranston.  I don’t have a clue who Bryan Cranston is (sorry), but some people might know him from “Breaking Bad,” or “Malcolm in the Middle,” or even a few “Seinfeld” episodes.  He does evil well in this show.

James and I stayed up past our bedtime last night and managed to watch episodes 6 and 7. We were left speechless with our jaws hanging open.  Season 1 only has 11 episodes, and I’m dying to binge watch the last of them today… alas, time does not allow for that, so I must wait.

My point?  If you like a good crime drama, like to see people get their comeuppance, and love when your show has wicked twists and turns that always leave you guessing (close your mouth please), give “Sneaky Pete” a watch.  You won’t be disappointed.

Hiya!

Hey!  How’s that for a catchy title!  I’m brilliant that way, you know.

I got an email from my sister today saying I’d been awful quiet, so I thought I’d write a quick update to say, yes, I’m still here.

Over the weekend, we had snowmageddon.  I am not a snow person.  I do not do snow.  And yet, this winter, snow insists on showing up on my doorstep and wreaking havoc on my roads. That nonsense is about to end though as the forecast is predicting rain, rain, and more rain. Hallelujah!

wp-1486614485976.jpg

Last Friday, AJ twisted his ankle at school and sprained it.  Yep… snow.  Or ice.  Same difference. But did I mention it’s going to rain?  Hallelujah!

It’s so cold in my house that the fishtank heater can’t even keep up with warming the water.  I had to get a backup because I know this current one is going to fail any day now as it’s been running 24/7 just lately.  But it’s about to be 50 deg F here in the next day or two.  That’s right… dare I say it?!  Hallelujah!

And don’t you worry about the raccoons… we’ve got them covered.  They’re getting plenty to eat, snow and all. The cats are kind of hungry, but those little raccoons are sure sitting pretty!

wp-1486611517329.jpg

Because this little sweetie is probably thinking, “It’s good to be alive right about now” (hallelujah!), he deserves a little Andy Grammer!

  • Winter got you down?  Or are you used to it and loving the snowy days?
  • Who wishes they were in Hawaii right now besides me?
  • Who’s running Reno in April?  Anybody?  Anybody?

Go check out James’s most recent post at 50 in 50 Marathon Quest… he has an exciting announcement about BibRave!
