Fail…

I made this rice tonight:

20160524_185302.jpg

Notice what I did wrong?  Aren’t you supposed to boil the water first before you add the rice? No worries… I’m not eating it… I’ll ask James later how it turned out.

Last night, I made these whole wheat tortillas in the oven:

I thought they’d be yummy, nice and crisp.  I may as well have been eating a piece of cardboard because that’s exactly what they tasted like… cardboard.  <sigh>  Time for me to resign as the family cook… the boys will have to make their own Mac & Cheese (bummer).

These…

20160521_094554.jpg

… are the bestest, most sinful snack ever in the history of ever.  Cinnamon and sugar crostinis, courtesy of Haggen’s (so, no, I didn’t make them; James and I did, however, eat an entire bag of them last weekend).

On a bright note, the rescue and rehab center I work at just released 3 orphaned goslings to a new family (geese are awesome at fostering other babies… because they can’t count).  What makes this special to me is that I was the releasor of said releasees.  It was amazing.  The little goslings thought they needed to follow me, so they did, until I walked them over to their new family… then they made a beeline to their new brothers and sisters and never looked back.

Two are smack dab in the middle… a little smaller than the others but they’ll thrive now.

Two days later I went back to check on them.  Yep, still there, still with their little yellow heads (look for the tiny tint of yellow).

Rock ‘N’ Roll Seattle is coming up, June 18th.  I don’t even want to talk about my training… that deserves a post all on its own (hint: severe PF).

Have a great night/day!!  Got any wisdom for Wednesday?

This, That, and The Other

The flu bug in my house is thankfully all gone now.  James got lucky… he was not affected.  He thinks it has something to do with having gotten the flu shot.  I don’t believe that for an instant. I think he avoided the flu because he’s meticulous about washing his hands and using hand sanitizer (inside joke because I don’t believe in getting the flu shot). Regardless, we are once again a healthy and happy family!  I’ll be spending the next week bleaching and sanitizing everything we’ve ever touched.  Yay.

thumbs up

Tuesday was Jamesy’s birthday!  Even though AJ and I had some resemblance of an illness, we still managed to give James a nice, happy evening!  I actually made some home-made cupcakes… with frosting!  And I even made some type of chicken parmesan dinner for him that he really enjoyed.  The secret was in the frying of the chicken pieces… I went full fat and full flavor for this baby!!  Bread crumbs, egg, and milk for dipping, and good old fashioned vegetable oil for frying!!  No oven baking… no boring panko crumbs… full flavor all the way!  (I am such a rebellious soul, hehe)  No worries… we went back to healthy on Wednesday (well, at least until Friday Happy Hour, :D).

Speaking of healthy, we got a new little toy… the Nutribullet by Magic Bullet!  We’ve always made our shakes and smoothies in the Magic Bullet, but the motor started to die, so enter the Nutribullet!  Much bigger than a Magic Bullet… kind of like a full size blender and super powerful.  You can make 2 servings in one go, and not near as klunky to wash as a blender.  We just love our little gadgets.

Can’t leave out the recipe book it came with, with lots of healthy smoothies to create!

As for work, it’s been a week!  Fawns being born, ducklings losing their mothers, bunny nests being uncovered, fledgling birds that really don’t need to be rescued… it’s just crazy.  Some of you may not be aware, but I work at a rescue and rehab for wild animals.  A couple of tips if you run across a wild baby animal:

20160514_111303.jpg

Geese will foster orphaned goslings. Ducks will kill ducklings that are not their own.

  • Birds:  Parents will still take care of their young while they’re on the ground learning to fly.  If you see parents in the area, leave the bird alone.  It’s also okay to re-nest the bird.  That thing where birds won’t accept their young after a person has touched it is just a myth.
  • Fawns:  You will never see the mother.  The mother will sometimes leave the baby for up to 12 hours to forage for food; however, she is still in the area.  Fawns are programmed to sit as still as possible until mom returns.  Unless you see obvious signs of it being hurt, leave the baby alone!
  • Bunnies:  If your dog or cat brings you a bunny, get it to a licensed rehabber as soon as possible.  Never, ever, ever feed a bunny milk, kitten replacement milk, or puppy replacement milk, or milk of any kind for that matter.  They will develop bloat and die.  If a nest has been uncovered, cover it back up in such a manner that the mother will have to disturb the covered area to get to her babies, that way you can tell if she’s returned to the nest or not.  If she doesn’t return after 12 hours, take them to a licensed rehabber. (If a bunny is the size of an apple, it’s big enough to be on its own).
  • Squirrels:  Put them back in the nest if you don’t see any obvious signs of injury.  If the nest is too high, gently pinch their little toes until they cry out then leave the area.  Mom will come down to get her baby and take it back up to the nest, but not while you’re still around.

As for this guy below, he was afraid to come down out of a tree because of a nearby barking dog.  A citizen thought he was stuck.  He was “freed” from this position and still wouldn’t come down. But once the dog was quieted and no one was around, he came down on his own accord. (If you’re unable to make out what it is… it’s a raccoon, and a very healthy one at that!)

I am now about to attempt my first 3-mile run after a 2-week break.  As long as I don’t cough up a lung in the process, I’ll be good to go.  After all, my next half is only a month away.  Holy crap.

Have a great week!!

Motivational Music Monday #9

James and I received some super fabulous support over the weekend from our blogging friends in regards to the SLC Marathon, and I’d like to say a great big thank you and let you know I really appreciate all of you!!  You made me smile and encouraged me when I needed it most… you are the best support system ever!!  Thank you!!

I don’t have the wherewithal to write about the race tonight (I’ll do that tomorrow).  It’s been a long travel day, but as promised, I am one sparkly bling richer.  And if you know me at all, you know it’s what motivates me!  So yes, I finished!!  State #5 done!  My thighs are screaming at me and on fire, but I finished!

20160416_165015.jpg

And now it’s time for another Motivational Music Monday song!  This is open to anyone and everyone!  Go add a link of a song you are enjoying this week and/or a link to your blog at 50 in 50 Marathon Quest.  You might discover some new music, or maybe some old music that you forgot about.  James seems to have posted a cover song.  I’m a Buble fan, so I can think of a million cover songs I could contribute by my boy alone… BUT… I’m going to surprise him and come up with something totally different than my norm.

Smoking in the Boys Room by Motley Crue (originally done by Brownsville Station).  It’s still fun to listen to even after 30 years (when did Motley Crue become classic rock?!).

Have a great Monday!!  Best wishes for those running Boston!  And kudos to all you supporters of runners!  You all are amazing!!

More This and That

20160331_195734.jpg

It’s Sunday night and I’m sitting here craving a chocolate moon pie (;D).  Does anybody else like them, or is it just me?  In my younger years, I would stay with my grandmother during the summer in Bountiful, Utah, hang out at the pool, and after every swim session, I ate a chocolate moon pie. Maybe I just need to go swimming.  Or maybe the weather has been so nice here in the Pacific Northwest that it makes me think of summertime.  But the real answer is probably because I just read a post that mentioned them.

20160403_115014.jpg

Speaking of weather, it really has been gorgeous.  Today was 70 degrees and sunny.  That is indeed summer weather… for these parts anyway.  And I completed my long run right in the peak of it.  But funny enough, never once did I feel overheated.  Okay, well, I took a break after mile 5, ran back by the house, cooled myself down with a wet paper towel and got some ice water, but still, it wasn’t horrible to be out running in the middle of the day.

20160402_163454.jpg

James and I hit up the REI sale yesterday (it’s a sports store), and he bought me a sweet little FitBit (he got himself the Garmin 235 watch and a Nathan Fireball Race Vest, so he didn’t go without).   Just a new fun little toy with more charts, graphs, and apps!

20160403_103349.jpg

As you can see from above, I was loaded for bear when I went for my run today.  I had my Garmin Vivoactive to track and map my run, my FitBit to track every movement that I made including the steps, and my magnetic bracelet for balance that I don’t go on a run without.  Overkill? Haha, perhaps… but when you’re a numbers and stats geek, which a lot of runners are, then it’s “the more the merrier.”

25064.jpeg

We also picked up a couple of Maple Bacon flavored GU gels from REI.  Fantastic!  Have you tried this flavor yet?  I had mine at about mile 5 when I was a touch hungry.  I found that after I ate some of the gel then licked my lips, I had added salt flavor!  Just like real bacon!  (I know some you may be quite grossed out by this… sorry!  #runnerslife)

2016-04-03-21.36.07.jpg.jpg

And above was my final long run before Salt Lake City on April 16.  See how I did that in the picture?  Map from the Garmin, stats from the FitBit.  There’s something appealing about seeing 22,000 as opposed to 10 (size matters?).  Calories burned were over 2000… I totally have room in my diet today for a moon pie.

20160329_190254.jpg

It’s almost Monday already so it’s time for Jamesy’s Motivational Music Monday!  His particular choice this week has prompted me to post this one… an oldie but a goodie!  It still puts a spring in my step! I find it kind of funny that a lot of videos don’t match the meaning of the song whatsoever… ever notice that?!

Hope you have a wonderful week!  The rain returns tomorrow for us, but I am so very thankful for the beautiful sunshine we have had just recently!!

Motivation Monday

Today is Motivation Monday… here, there, and everywhere… so I wanna play too.

First, I’m linking up with James at 50 in 50 Marathon Quest for his Motivational Music Monday theme. He’s posted a classic song from the ’70s, but I’m going to go with something just a bit more modern… well, as modern as you can get with my boy Michael Bublé.  Yeah, that’s right, I said it… he’s my boy.  Everyone who knows me knows it, so you may as well know it too just in case you didn’t already know it.

This song puts a spring in my step every time I’m out on a run and it comes on.  It’s a fun little ditty, a great FU song (perdone mi French), and a great pacer.  And it’s Michael Bublé, so of course it’s great.

As for Twitter and #MotivationMonday, I give you this:

Be good to yourselves and make it a great one!

Kindness… Pass It On

My child just came to me and asked me if he could show me a video.  I always take the time to watch the things that are important enough to him to want to show them to me.  Tonight, I’m especially glad I did.  It’s about random acts of kindness.  If you have a moment, watch this.  At the very least, it will make you smile.

Jamesy over at 50 in 50 Marathon Quest is looking for some music for his Motivational Music Monday.  Go check it out… maybe there’s a quirky little ditty you know about that you’d like to add to his list.

And if none of that made you smile, maybe this will… I made cupcakes.  That’s it.  Just cupcakes. No frosting.  Just cupcakes.  AJ ate one and said, “Mom, these are the best cupcakes ever.”

I don’t know… I think the asymmetrical thing works, don’t you?

Ominous

Today was my last long-ish run before the Lake Sammamish Half next Saturday.  The sky was dark and scary, which pretty much summed up my state of mind during my run.  But I’m not worried… I’ve got my 2016 PR Shoes to see me through!

Echoes Of My Neighbourhood #11

I live in a little town called Lake Stevens, aptly named for the lake which the community surrounds. Summers get a bit busy here as everyone finds something to do water-related… swimming, skiing, kayaking, boating, fishing, rowing.  We even have our own little rowing club. There’s sometimes activity on the water in winter as well, even people suited up skiing (extreme, very extreme).

At the Cove in the summer, we have “Music on the Lake,” where various local bands will come and perform, as well as outdoor movies.  The town’s biggest party takes place the last weekend in July, known as Aquafest.  Five blocks of Main Street are roped off and it becomes a fun little carnival with lots of games, rides, craft vendors, and food booths galore.

And it has just occurred to me, I’ve never shown pictures of the actual lake.  While it was cloudy when I took these pictures, we are never lacking for sunshine in the summer.

While Internet safety is always a primary concern, I’m not too worried about those of you who like to stalk.  I went to my local Wal-Mart this morning and stocked up on hunting supplies… so chances are I’m going to see you before you see me.  😀

I am joining Jacqueline Oby-Ikocha from A Cooking Pot and Twisted Tales for her series, “Echoes of My Neighbourhood,” where she challenges us all to share a photo of bits and pieces of wherever you are at any point in time.

Thursday’s Thoughts

I’m calling this Thursday’s Thoughts because I really just want to ramble and I suck at coming up with clever titles.  I do have a pretty picture though…

2014 May 082

Okay, well, I have prettier ones than that, but that one will have to do.  Still, you have to admit, it’s really a different looking flower, special in its own little way.

minion idiots

The highlight of my week at work… the county came to put up “No Parking” signs along our street and jack-hammered right through our phone line.  When the county worker was approached about it, he said, “Oops.  I probably should have got a dig order before I did that. My bad.”  We rescue injured wildlife.  No one can get through to us to report an injured animal.  “Oops, my bad” just doesn’t cut it.  I’m super hoping the director goes medieval on the county.

So, for that reason, I came home and wanted to watch cute animal videos on YouTube to relax. Found tons of them.  Probably spent an hour doing that, and then spent lots of time searching for something funny to put on my blog as I get so annoyed with all the doom and gloom of the everyday world and news.  So, here you go:

mouse in mouth

And why is that so funny?  Because I’ve totally been there.  Maybe I didn’t get a mouse in my mouth, but I have been known to sleep with a few half-eaten lizards.  A sign of pure love.

The Lake Sammamish Half-Marathon is a week from Saturday, just in case I haven’t mentioned it enough, ;).  This particular race was Jamesy’s very first half-marathon ever in the history of ever.  We all know I run for bling.  This was James’s “bling” for that very first one:

p1000911-1.jpg

I kid you not.  It’s a cardboard shoe.  I think that if they would’ve handed that to me after the race, I would have said, “Yeah, one and done.”  But then again, the very first 5K I did, they didn’t hand out any finisher medals at all and gave us one super ugly tech shirt.  And that was a difficult course we ran.  Hmmm, no wonder it took me awhile to get my run groove.

Just for fun, see if you can solve these brain teasers.  They were on the Linked In feed.  They’re actually quite fun…

image001.png  23900.jpeg

Let me know if you’d like the answers.  I might be nice enough to put them in my next post, :D. Not really… put your answer in the comments, and I’ll let you know if you were right or wrong.

I’ve spent the entire week working on video from Hawaii.  I’ve finished one from the run streak I did the day before the race.  It was fun to do, although I seriously need to work on my editing skills and everything else related to filming and videoing and such.  If you want to watch it, it’s here.  Not a lot of good scenery footage, but you do get the idea of where I ran every single morning while in Maui (other than on race day).

Anyone got any fun plans this weekend?  Hope it’s a great one!!
