North Olympic Discovery Half Marathon

As some of you may know by now, James wasn’t able to run this marathon Sunday (June 4).  If you’re perplexed, you can read about his unfortunate outcome/circumstances here, which means I was on my own. As history dictates, James usually passes me during these events, so I missed him greatly on the course.

That being said, virtually he was with me the whole way.  He was a great cheerleader… even if I did stop talking to him during mile 10 (details to come, 😀 )

Pre-race, he got me super close to the start line, dropped me off 1/2-mile away.  Definitely much better than a shuttle bus, and I needed a warm-up, so I jogged to the field where the race started.  I immediately went to the portaloo line.  Pretty standard in that line… not enough potties, and by the time I reached them, the Star-Bangled Banner was being played.  Then it became a race all in itself to get to the start line.

The gun sounded, and all went well until 5K, never mind the powerful head wind.

I texted James at 5K and informed him I just ran into an evil hill.  I said some mighty nasty words… then I soon realized that mile 3 to 4 was all uphill, which is about when I also realized that this was actually a trail race and not just a road race.  Huge difference.  I didn’t train for a trail race, and I didn’t train on hills, especially the gut-wrenching hills I was running up.  I thought I was just going to run a nice trail/pathway next to the ocean… but noooo… that wasn’t the case.  My bad.

Eventually I texted James and asked when my pain was going to end.  He did a quick reconnaissance and informed me I was in hill hell until after mile 8.  Awesome.

Shortly after mile 8, maybe mile 9 (I’ve lost my senses at this point, so I can’t remember), it became a nice downhill path.  I was so relieved.  Down I went… until the shift at mile 10.  All uphill.  I was spent.  I texted James and said, “Not going to make my time.  5K left. Head wind. Gassed.  Still going.”

Up, up, up we go!

Despite the course “description” on the website of being flat, the last 3 miles were a painful and gradual uphill climb.  I kept saying to myself, “Okay, once I get past this hill, I’ll take off again and redeem myself.”  It never happened because the hill never ended.

I was very thankful to see James at about 12.75 miles as he ran a little bit with me to keep me going, at least until we reached the finisher’s chute, and then the crowd cheered me in across the finish line.  Such great support for an extremely challenging course.

The bottom line…  beautiful scenery, beautiful people, really hard course.  But I finished.  At the end of the day, I clocked in over 15 miles/24 km (over 32,000 steps on the FitBit).

As for the The Whole 30 having an effect… I believe it helped.  I still felt strong and ready to go, even after miles 8 and 9… it was only after the mile 10 hill that I had a bit of an emotional breakdown and just couldn’t handle any more hills.

The elevation profile. The drop from 220 to 0 was at about mile 8 or 9. The tiny (but huge) bump towards the end left me deflated.

It was a great day, a great race, and quite frankly, it was my own “un”doing by not training properly for an extremely hilly course.  If you ever run this race… do 10 to 20 miles on a mountain trail for training (numerous times), and you’ll be fully prepared.

Now on to enjoy the beautiful town and area of Port Angeles…  I think there was talk of a hike up to Hurricane Ridge tomorrow, or something stupid like that… 😀

From Sequim to Port Angeles

17 Years

2000

Today is mine and 50 in 50 Marathon Quest’s 17th wedding anniversary, so in honor of this special day, I found some great words of advice for anyone who may be interested in having a loving, long-lasting relationship:

To keep your marriage brimming

With love in the loving cup,

Whenever you’re wrong — admit it,

Whenever you’re right — shut up.

2017

Happy Anniversary James!

A Smidge of an Update

Downtown River Run in Reno

I’m not going to write a big recap about this race.  Just know it was hard.  Probably the hardest 10K I’ve ever completed.  Because of Reno’s higher elevation, I couldn’t catch my breath after the first mile (this happened in SLC as well, after mile 6).  James also spent most of his race in the Red Zone because of the lack of oxygen.  But that’s not important.  We went, ran a hard race, and had a fabulous time.

The Whole 30

A couple of weeks ago, I had looked into The Whole 30 food program.  Have you heard of it? Basically for 30 days, you eat nothing but whole foods, nothing processed and nothing with sugar.  I get that it’s a variant of the low-carb craze, but really not so much.  Potatoes are whole foods, pulled right out of the ground, so they work (but they don’t work in the low-carb diets).

The premise is to detox your body from all the food processing that goes on, and then slowly reintroduce foods back into your diet to see how your body reacts.  If a certain food doesn’t make you feel so good, then guess what!  You don’t eat that food no mo’!  I needed something to get me off all of the sweets, desserts, and chips I’d been getting in the habit of eating recently, so enter The Whole 30 program.

I had the start date written on the calendar and was 100% mentally prepared.  The mental part is important.  Your brain can talk you out of anything if you let it.  I started May 2nd, so I’ve been on it a whole 2 days now.  The cravings of chocolate and chips are strong, but I shut those thoughts down by asking myself, “Am I hungry enough to eat a plate of spinach?”  If the answer is no, I drink water.  If the answer is yes, then I eat something I’ve prepared in advance so I do not fail and give in.  Again, it’s only been 2 days, but I’m hoping that I will remain strong for the entire 30 days.  Okay, not hoping, I WILL remain strong for the entire 30 days.

The foods I’ll miss and crave most are oatmeal and peanut butter, every single form of chocolate, cookie and cake, chocolate milk (I already said chocolate, didn’t I), cheese, nuts, and chips/crisps.  For my pre-run carb load, it will be a baked potato with clarified butter, although I haven’t figured out how I’m going to fuel in the middle of my long runs yet.  Maybe I can make some banana mash, place it in a baggie, and I’ll have my own GU minus all the added sugar.  I don’t know.  (For those who don’t know, GU is a nasty gel a lot of runners are forced to consume in the midst of a long run to keep their energy levels up.)

Mmmm, tastes just like bacon!!

I’ve also had to give up my morning, mid-day, and afternoon cups of tea as I use sweetener.  I now start my day with a nice cold glass of iced tea.  Super glad it’s warming up or I’d be missing my cup of hot chocolate too!  (Seeeee!  Wayyy too much chocolate!!  It’s a good thing I don’t drink soda or I’d be hurtin’ for certain!)

My other goal during this time is to do something 6 days a week, not just on scheduled run days. Yesterday I ran.  Today I was supposed to go for a bike ride, but the heavens opened up and gave us a storm from hell, so I did nothing.  A minor set-back… I’ll start again tomorrow as I’m scheduled for another 3 miles.  (And for those who are anal about their numbers… yes, I should’ve ran around until my watch said 3.1.)

And finally…

The child is having a great time in Hawaii without his parents.  Am I the only one who thinks this is completely unfair?!!

I’ll leave you now with a song for MMM… this came on during my race in Reno.  Oh the irony.  “Sucker for Pain.”  Yes indeedy.

Have a happy weekend!!

Running… And Stuff

Yes!  I’m actually going to talk about my running.  But first… I have other things I want to share…

Water Drinking Apps:  As the weather has been so cold, I haven’t been as dedicated to my water bottle as I should.  Sooo, enter a cute little app, Plant Nanny, where you log the cups of water you drink by watering plants.  Ever play “Plants vs Zombies?”  That’s exactly what these little plants look like. They grow when you water them (or, in reality, log your water intake).  A great idea.  However, when one is a gamer, which I am, it now becomes a game rather than a utility app.  A gamer will no longer keep track of water intake… the goal becomes all about keeping the plants alive and making them grow, and how many can I grow to make my plant nursery full.  As well, the alert that it’s time to drink is quite subtle.  If I look at my phone and there’s a little plant dancing at the top, I know it’s time to have a glass of water, or really, water my plant. To keep it alive. Because it’s so freaking cute.  I’ll be looking for a new water app.

March Madness:  Yes, I played the NCAA brackets.  Yes, I am in first place by about 40 points. 😀  I chose my original home team to win, the University of Arizona Wildcats from good old Tucson.  They. Could. Go. All. The. Way!!

St. Patrick’s Day:  I think my plant is tired of water and would really like a Guinness…

New Trail and Running:  I mentioned that James and I were going to a new trail last weekend, the Sammamish River Trail.  We did, and had a fabulous time.  So much so, we’re going back this coming weekend for our long runs.  The weather was perfect, just a bit rainy, but a pineapple express was passing through, so it was warm and rainy. Like I said, perfect.

No worries… I got this covered! 🙂

I celebrated Pi Day with a special run…

And this past Sunday, we actually had sun.  Holy cow, do you see that?  Blue skies!!  Yowza!  I got to feel the sun on my face, the first time in forever, it seems.

Can you tell what this is?

I still had to get on the treadmill in the midst of it all, but I’m starting to see a light at the end of the indoor tunnel.  Looking forward to spring training!

So tell me:

  • Do you use a water app to make sure you’re drinking enough?
  • Did you move for 3.14 miles/yards/feet on Pi Day?
  • Who did you pick to win the NCAA Championship?

En Vogue

Way back when, late ’80s/early ’90s, I lived in the University of Arizona district in Tucson.  I walked everywhere.  To and from work, I walked.  Restaurants, stores, I walked.  Even in the midst of the summer heat (one time in 117 degrees F), I walked. And I never went anywhere without my Walkman (for cassette tapes) or my Discman (for CDs).  I was always plugged into music and had favorite groups I would listen to over and over again. En Vogue was one of those groups.

For #FlashbackFriday and for #MotivationalMusicMonday over at 50 in 50 Marathon Quest, I present to you En VogueFree Your Mind!  An inspiring song, especially with all the separation that’s going on in our country now.  It’s also great to get up and move to!

And just for extra fun, Hold On… the first hit from their debut album.

Oh, I can’t stop there!  Giving Him Something He Can Feel just makes me smile!

And last but not least, Yesterday.  You had to own the album to actually know they did it, but this song showcases their true talent.

Saturday morning, James and I are headed to the Lake Sammamish Half-Marathon.  He’s running, and I’m sitting out this time… for once I get to be the cheerleader!  Yayyy!  It’s supposed to snow again (boooo)… so be sure to wish him good luck!  He’s going to need to run really really fast just to stay warm!  (Please wear your Hoka’s, hunny… you don’t own YakTrax).

Have a fantastical weekend!!

I Can’t Drive… 55!

This is my bestie from high school, Sheryl (on the right, 1985).

This is also my bestie from high school, Mindy (on the right, 1987… no giggling at the funny old pictures).

We were as close as sisters and were always there for each other no matter what.  And the trouble we used to get in… well, that’s a story for another day.

Graduation, Baby! 1985

Anyway, just before our senior year of high school started, Sheryl’s dad won a car.  Not just any car, but a 1985 Dodge Daytona Turbo Z and the very first one to come off the line.  The license plate read CAR-001.

ps_2010_10_13___09_07_25

It had a factory stereo in it that could blast the ice off the windows.  Turn up that bass!  Which we did… often.  You could hear Sheryl coming from a block away.

One day we decided to go test just how sporty this little car actually was.  We went across the river to the backroads of rural Graham County, Arizona, where we had miles upon miles of empty road with all kinds of hills and twists and turns.  Sheryl managed to exceed 80 mph on one stretch… keeping in mind that this was back in the day when the legal speed limit on every major highway was only 55 mph, so hitting 80+ was a big deal.  If we would have been caught, Sheryl surely would’ve had her license revoked.

Needless to say, Sheryl acquired many speeding tickets during the next couple of years.  It’s a really good thing her brother was a cop.

The following was a song we would crank up in that sporty little car of hers with the kick-ass stereo whenever we would cruise the backroads because it was oh-so-true. This is also my pick for James’s Motivational Music Monday this week.  After all these years, it still gets the blood and the heart pumping.

Sadly, Sheryl died in 2012.  However, 30+ years later, Mindy and I are still in touch.

So Much Love!

Ya’all are simply amazing!  Love is all over Word Press today for Valentine’s Day!  Songs, poems, letters, recipes, stories… such a positive atmosphere!

I’m especially enjoying all the music!  I follow quite a few blogs who love their music just as much as I, and a few songs have popped up over the past few days that I haven’t heard or have forgotten about. If you are a music lover, go check out some of these blogs:

All these blogs offer more than just music, and if I’ve left anyone out, I apologize.  Sometimes my Reader and my email trip me up.

So to all my fellow music lovers, not only is this my choice for MMM this week, this is also for you…

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Hell Week

Just when you think you have it together, it all falls apart.  Okay, not really, but this has not been one my favorite weeks in the history of weeks.

School started!  Yay!!  AJ now has to get up at 6 a.m. as opposed to the normal noon he’s been used to all summer.  Mind you, he’s pretty much sound by 10 p.m., so it all evens out in the end. First day of school is always a little bit hairy as one needs to establish a whole brand new routine, and with him having to get up that much earlier makes it a bit difficult.  He’s adjusted well for the first 3 days, so I’m proud of him.  He’s growing up and accepting responsibility.

Speaking of growing up, he’s 5’5.5″ tall now and won’t turn 12 until next month.  He now takes a regular P.E. class and has to run a mile every day, then right afterwards has to walk home a mile.  Hmmmm…. there may eventually be potential for the child to start joining us in our 50 states quest.

But the week doesn’t stop there with just new routines… noooo… my mother calls me soon after I drop AJ off for his first day and she needs to go to the ER because she’s throwing up blood.  After spending the entire day in the ER and after numerous tests, they wanted to keep her because her hematocrit was dropping, a sign of internal bleeding.  She refused.  Yep.  She outright refused.  I’m none too pleased with her.  So I’ve been dealing with that crap too.

And now I’m late for Motivational Music Monday.  Kinda like really late.  More like Motivational Music Friday.

Actually, this one isn’t all that “motivational,” it’s just fun and lighthearted, one that I really enjoy. And it’s from the Eighties… classic ’80s!  Love them ’80s songs!  Hope this takes you back to a happy place!

And if you haven’t seen, James gave a great recap of our most recent venture with the Hamster Endurance Run.  Go check it out.  He does a nice job of his recaps.

By the way, did I mention my remaining fish have survived the death tank?  All better now!  🙂

Happy Friday my friends!!  May you have a blessed weekend!!

Counting Stars

It’s Monday!  Which means it must be time for Motivational Music Monday at 50 in 50 Marathon Quest!  Pop on over and say “hey!” to James!  Be sure to let him know your favorite song for this week!  He’s in the process of building his Spotify Playlist, and believe you me, it needs some additions!  😉

I’ve been having a great time with the group One Republic just recently.  They’re one of those bands that just can’t go wrong with me.  Their music hits my soul as do the lyrics.  While Stop and Stare is actually stuck in my head at this particular time, I felt maybe Counting Stars was just a bit more upbeat, something one could trot along nicely to, not to mention the words are something that hit home with me…

I see this life, like a swinging vine
Swing my heart across the line
And in my face is flashing signs
Seek it out and ye’ shall find
Old, but I’m not that old
Young, but I’m not that bold
And I don’t think the world is sold
On just doing what we’re told
I feel something so right
Doing the wrong thing
I feel something so wrong
Doing the right thing
I couldn’t lie, couldn’t lie, couldn’t lie
Everything that kills me makes me feel alive

Have a fabulous day!!
