Another Year, Another Birthday

It doesn’t take much to put my family into celebration mode.  We’ll celebrate any little thing.  But this week was a full-on celebration all week long. Okay, kinda sorta.  Okay, not really.  We celebrated one night.  But the spirit was there all week long.

Yes, another birthday has come and gone for me.  Cheers to my Squad Runner teammate who told me if I ran a kilometer for every year I was alive, I would complete a half marathon.  A half marathon is just over 21K… so yeah, I couldn’t help but smile… or in reality, laugh out loud.

Jamesy surprised me with a few goodies… especially the Momentum Jewelry.  Do you all see it and get it?  “I can and I will” is the tag line for my blog!  And the “Be Awesome Today,” well that’s because I’m awesome every day, isn’t it!  (Ha! Someone is sure full of herself right now, lol.)

He also got me some new shoes!!  We all need new shoes, don’t we!!  The more, the better I say!  Twenty years ago, my closet was filled with high heels and sandals… now it’s overrun with running shoes.  My how times and priorities change.

And meet Riku, a gift from my son. Riku is a character from my favorite video game, Kingdom Hearts.  Everyone in this family loves the Funko figures; AJ has the most by far, but James is closing in on him for a very close 2nd. Me, I’m at the back of the pack with just this one (see what I did there?  Running reference, lol).

And with that, my friends, it has been a very good week.  And even after a night of karaoking, I still managed to get 4 miles in today, with the goal of a 10K tomorrow.  So, yeah… a really good week.

Happy trails!

Lucky Number 13

Actually, I’m not fond of this number at all.

At The Last Supper, there were 13 people around the table… the 13th supposedly being Judas who betrayed Christ.

On Friday the 13th, in October 1307, Philip IV of France arrested hundreds of the Knights Templar, then tortured and murdered them (they protected Christian pilgrims during the Crusades).

In a tarot card deck, XIII is the card of Death.

The Apollo 13 lunar mission was a “successful failure” (successful because no one died).

However….

That isn’t really the point of my post.

My point then??  Glad you asked!!

My baby boy just turned 13!!  I am now officially the mother of a teenager (may the Good Lord have mercy on my soul)!

Happy Birthday AJ!!

1st Birthday

9th Birthday

13 candles nearly set off the smoke detectors.

13th Birthday

Wow. Growing up. #GoHawks

I’m still not fond of the number 13… but I think I can live with it for a year.

Happy Birthday!

I noticed a few of my favorite bloggers celebrated their birthday in January!

At Seek The Best Blog, there were lots of birthdays being celebrated over there!  We also had Brian from Bonnywood Manor singing some tunes!  And then Ben at Running Of The Books celebrated his with a run, yummy food, and some great wine!  And we have yet to learn how Susan from Woman on the Ledge will celebrate (beginning of February/end of January… you know, same thing).

I wish you all a big…

But I have to confess… now that the secret is out over at 50 in 50 Marathon Quest, I celebrated a birthday last week as well.  The big 5-0.  We don’t put those two numbers together because they’re just not pretty.  We call this birthday the “one day older than yesterday” birthday. Because I’m still coming to terms with that ridiculous number 5.

However, that being said, I have some mighty big goals to celebrate that mighty big number.  I wanted to do everything 5-0 this year… you know, 50K ultra, actually tackle my 50-mile bike ride, maybe even try doing 50 situps… 🙂

Can’t say I’ll hit the 50K, but I have faith I’ll hit the 50-miler at some point this summer (we’re bringing the trainer inside so my sit bones can get used to my saddle while the rain continues to… rain).  But… okay… I’m going to put it out there… the real goal is the Marine Corps Marathon in October (my very first 26.2)*.  There’s a caveat to that though… by the time we have to enter the drawing in March, my pace has to be below a certain time.  So, I’m diligently getting up stupid early every morning, hitting the treadmill and running intervals to speed my slow ass up.  I’ll keep you posted.

In the meantime, I decided to follow Ma Allie‘s recipe for baking a cake and came up with this:

Okay, I’m kidding… it wasn’t Ma Allie’s fault, she’s a wonderful cook; I wish I had her talent.  It’s me, all me… just another one of my many cooking disasters, made the weekend before my birthday. Hence, the beautiful, store-bought, chocolate pie above.  My family are so loving and forgiving!

One final note, and I’m going to jump the gun and spill the beans here, Queen with Adam Lambert are coming to Seattle in July.  Tickets went on sale today, and we snatched a couple of those bad boys up!!  Adam may not be Freddie, but I think he’s going to rock the house, and I can’t wait!

And, to all of us struggling with that ugly number 5, this is for us…

  • Did you hit the half-century mark recently?  If so, does the number matter to you?
  • Any other January birthdays I missed?
  • Who else is putting in for the MCM??

*To SRG… we considered coming your way like we discussed, but it’s not feasible this year… THIS year, 😀

I Can’t Feel My Face

So, I had dental surgery last Tuesday.  One of my wisdom teeth was starting to grow directly into the nerve root of my upper back molar, causing me a significant amount of pain.  I was hoping that the antibiotics the dentist gave me would clear up the pain and that surgery could wait until after the Route 66 Half, but I wasn’t infected, so there was no pain relief from the antibiotics, and something had to give.  Which just so happened to be my back molar.

Now, most people get to be asleep when they have dental surgery.  Not me.  I have been to 3 different oral surgeons, all of whom couldn’t find a vein on me (my veins roll).  One of them even turned me away and said “oh hell no,” he wasn’t doing surgery without me being asleep. Drama, drama, drama.  Anyway, I stayed awake, they eventually got the tooth out, and now no more pain other than regular postop.  Yay!

Moving on…

AJ had his official birthday party with friends last weekend.  Thankfully my mouth pain behaved so I could deal with 6 very loud boys with no problem.

3… 2… 1… DAB!

Then this happened:

Ohhh yeahhhhh!  My wonderful hubby made sure I had the brand new MB CD to relax to that very same evening!  I’m biased, but I give the album two thumbs up!  Not keen on his Beach Boys remake… I think he slowed it down way too much, but hey, you can’t be perfect all the time, can you!

Other than that, I’ve been pretty much recouping!  I missed Motivational Music Monday last week, and apparently so did James!  James was having problems with his site showing up in the reader, so Music Monday turned into Music Happy Hour Friday!  He picked a silly obnoxious song as he was drinking pumpkin beer (that’s just wrong on so many levels), but if you’re curious as to what was making him get down and boogie, go check it out.

As for me, I’m choosing a song and dedicating it to all the dentists and oral surgeons out there. This song has also been on my playlist for my last 4 races. Love it! Enjoy your Weeknd (ha! see what I did there?)!!

It’s almost Halloween!  Are the spiders and ghosts in place??  Are you dressing up to hand out candy?  If so, what’re you going to be?  And stay tuned… now that I’m feeling better, I’m about to go explore a spooky trail with my GoPro to see where it takes me…

Happy Birthday To The Child!

The child, otherwise known as AJ, turned a big 12 this week!  So it’s been a week of 12s and celebrations and good times!

He’s been a “12th man” since the day he was born!

To this day, he still loves to throw rocks into the water.

Officially 12!

Also, speaking of 12s… I have to give a big shout out to Mike at A Little Bit Out of Focus for the screaming great time he got at his marathon this past weekend wearing… you guessed it… bib #12!!  Congratulations Mike!!  You have found the Power of the 12!

On to the music… I had the silly idea to post AJ’s 5 favorite songs for Motivational Music Monday at 50 in 50 Marathon Quest, but once he gave me his list… ummmm… no.  Sorry child.  Ain’t no one got time for that noise!

Did you all know my boy, Michael Bublé, has a new album being released this week?!!  Oh yeah. So in honor of that little gem, I’m sharing with you his first single from said album!  Hope you enjoy just as much as I do!  It’s a snappy little ditty that features Black Thought from The Roots! (And there you go, AJ… a little rap for you anyway, hehe)

Are we having fun yet??!!  What song is making you happy this week?  Go let James know at 50 in 50!!
