Nero (12/2000 – 11/2016)

When James and I got married back in 2000, I owned 5 cats.  And even though he had never in his life been around animals before, he was very accepting of the situation.  I guess you could say animals are what make me, me.

He actually enjoyed being around the cats in the beginning, so much so, he absolutely had to rescue this one kitten, Nero, from a couple who had just found out they were pregnant and decided Nero posed too much of a health hazard (please do not even get me started on this).  I was against getting another cat… 100% against it.  But James persisted, and I gave in.

So this cute little kitten came to live with us and unfortunately got beatings from the other cats for a little while.  My gentlest cat, Esmeralda, dished out the most severe beatings, and she was relentless for 2 solid weeks.  She chased him under the washing machine daily.  Eventually the beatings stopped and they became the best of friends.  Ez was the matriarch of the family; she commanded respect and she definitely got it.  When she was 17, arthritic, and could hardly walk, her and Nero would still play chase, and Nero would wait for her to catch up, then bolt off again, and so on and so forth… he knew she hurt, so he was patient and gentle. He even let her win the wrestling matches when, in reality, he could’ve taken her down no problem.

Nero 2010

One spring evening in Arizona, James grilled us some salmon.  Nero was about 7 months old.  James had left his plate of salmon on the coffee table to get up for a second, and Nero was so smart and stealth, he snuck up to James’s plate, grabbed the salmon in his mouth, and ran with it.  Unfortunately, that particular piece of salmon was as big as Nero was, so he didn’t get far. Besides that, Nero was so shocked that his little plan worked, he didn’t know what to do with that huge piece of salmon.  He wasn’t sure if he should eat it, soon decided against it, then ran off, without ever knowing the joy of salmon.

Nero was a super smart cat.  When we moved to Washington, to a house that had lever handles, it took him no time at all to figure out how to open them.  He loved going around opening all the doors. It was entertainment for him.  James finally had to replace all the levers with knobs because, you know, cats don’t have thumbs.

This morning we had to say goodbye to our beloved Nero.  His GI tract was shutting down, as were his kidneys, and he had lost too much of his body weight.  I know some cats live longer, but I think 16 is a great, long life for a cat, and we were blessed to have him for so long.  He was loved immensely, spoiled rotten, and will be greatly missed.  Rest in peace, sweet Nero.

Happy Endings

Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out.  –Robert T. Collier

About 2.8 lifetimes ago, or when I was 17, me and a friend were bored.  We didn’t drink and we didn’t party like our other friends, but we were extremely rebellious so we were looking for something stupid to do.  We decided to buy a pack of cigarettes.  We didn’t want anyone to see us smoking, so we just drove around and puffed away in secret.  My friend didn’t tell me she wasn’t actually inhaling, but unfortunately I was.  Thus began a very bad habit for me that would take almost 30 years to kick.

After many failed attempts at trying to quit through the years, I finally was able to say goodbye to cigarettes for good in 2012.  At one point, I had a small setback for about a month, but I think that’s when it really hit home that I no longer wanted to be a smoker.  It was one of the hardest things I’ve done, quitting smoking, but as with most challenges in life, it was 90% mental.  Once I overcame the mental struggle, it was all downhill from there, and for me, that mental struggle lasted nearly 30 years.  If you’ve chosen 2016 to be the year to kick an unhealthy habit, I wish you nothing but success.  If, however, it doesn’t stick this year… try, try again.  Because one day you will succeed.

In other news, it was a typical snowy/rainy day here in the Pacific Northwest.  And the Monday after a holiday weekend. Need I say more?

Happy 15th Birthday, Nero!

The smaller the box, the better…

Actually there’s some really good karma flowing through our home at the moment, and my car passed emissions today, on the first try!  After me driving around for a couple of months with the “check engine” light on, that right there is a reason to celebrate!  (It ended up being just a loose gas cap that I could never tighten, so not a costly fix… total score!)

“I like big butts and I cannot lie…”

As well, the streaking continues.  Day 4 done and another 2 miles under the belt.  Inside.  On the treadmill.  Happy-happy-joy-joy.

Hope you have succeeded in getting back to normal routine after the holiday season.   I know I had my challenges getting back to it, but the first day is always the hardest, isn’t it!

I leave you with one last thought to ponder:

Happy running!

Thinking Out Loud Thursday

I’m kind of in the mood to babble about nothing in particular, so I’m linking up with Amanda from Running With Spoons for TOLT.  Thanks Amanda for the creative outlet!!

thinking-out-loud.jpg1.  Winter Munchies.  Ella at Instinctive Fails talks about how animals fatten themselves up for the winter, so maybe humans do too?  I’ve decided I’m going to adopt that theory to explain my winter weight gain.  Think about it… our ancestors probably did have to bulk up to stay warm in the winter just as animals do.  So it would make perfect sense that our bodies instinctively store fat for the winter.  Well, it sounds good anyway. It has absolutely nothing to do with the extra cookies or fudge or egg nog that I treat myself to during the holidays… it’s really just pure instinct.  Necessary for survival.  During the holidays.

2.  Pinterest.  Yes, I’m older and not so social media savvy, but I just don’t get it!  I want to understand it, I really do, but right now I just can’t wrap my head around it.  What is the purpose?  What does one do on Pinterest?  It sounds like something Microsoft came up with before it released Windows 8 so everyone could get used to the idea of “pinning” things.  Or did Microsoft copy Pinterest?  Ooooo, conspiracy theory perhaps?  I should probably consult my 11-year-old and figure out how to use Pinterest.  No, actually, I think I need to watch a YouTube video on the ins and outs of Pinterest.  Is there a book out there called Pinterest for Dummies?

3.  I’ve noticed quite a few people have created the illusion of snow falling on their blogs.  May I just say this is a super cool feature!  I would love to have snow falling all over my blog during the holidays and winter months.  But why didn’t I get the memo on how to make the snow fall?  Can anyone tell me how this is done?

pass closed

4.  And speaking of snow falling, I hope no one is trying to get to Seattle via I-90.  I’m of the understanding that parts of the pass are closed.  For weeks I heard how mild our winter was going to be because we had such a hot summer and El Nino is going to last until 2016, blah, blah, blah, but noooo, we’ve had one storm system after another come in and practically drown us.  Did you hear that the governor of Washington has declared a state of emergency because of all our rain?  We haven’t got snow where I live, only rain (#thankful), but it makes for some pretty awful training runs, whether they’re on the trail or on the treadmill.  I’m so sick of running on the treadmill.  Ugh.  Ohhh wellll… suck it up, buttercup. You’ve still got a few weeks of training left.

5.  Meep.  He’s a cat.  To the Nth degree.  I don’t have much to say about him other than I really just wanted to share some silly pictures of him that I’ve taken recently.  (shameless plug, I know)

Step awayyy from the tree…

20151209_202956.jpg

He probably had done something wrong which is why he’s showing me his tummy… or just stretching, he’s probably really just stretching… he sooo needs to be messed with…

20151205_190205_001.jpg 20151209_191129.jpg

6.  And finally, the above is just a small sampling of how I’ve been preparing myself for winter survival.  And the holidays.  Yeah, I’m definitely going to say it’s total instinct.

I’ve babbled enough for today.  Do you have anything to babble about?  How does your body prepare for survival through the winter?  Got snow?  On your blog?  Got a cat that you love to mess with?

My Four-Legged Furry Children

Obviously I’m a huge animal lover as I work at the animal rehab and rescue facility, but I believe I’ve failed to mention my own animal family.  We have 3 loving cats that I’d like to introduce to you.

NERO

wpid-wp-1441918207748.jpeg

He’s our oldest at almost 15 years.  He’s kind of a rescue, sort of.  A couple had him as a kitten, gave him baths and everything, then the woman found out she was pregnant and didn’t want to risk owning a cat while being pregnant.  James was the softy and brought him home.  He came to us when he was about 4 months old.  He used to lay on James’ chest when he was little, and I warned him, “One day Nero is going to be a great big kitty and will still want to lay on your chest when he weighs 15 to 20 pounds.”  Guess what?!  I was right (I love being right).  Unfortunately he’s starting his downhill slide with some endocrine issues, but he’s still a joy to have around.  His favorite toy:  Nerf gun darts.wpid-20150829_141353.jpg

MEEP

MeepBack in 2011, a friend of mine had a litter of kittens, and I picked him out when he was about 3 weeks old.  Tuxedo cats are my absolute favorites.  He’s part Siamese, so he’s a talker.  Never shuts up, but can be a great conversationalist.  And with him being a boy, he really, really likes to cause trouble.  He loves to chew on white phone chargers or ear buds.  He also loves to floss his teeth with me… I’ll use one end of the string, he’ll use the other.

He’s actually our son’s cat.  Back when Meep was a kitten, before he gained all his weight and muscle, AJ thought it’d be cool to teach him to… fly.  Meep could jump 4 feet straight into the air when they were playing.  It was amazing.  He couldn’t do that now to save his life.  He’s a fat and happy 4-year-old, who still thinks I’m his surrogate mom… he comes to me for the hugs and the love and the suckling.  I used to let him curl up onto my shoulder when he was a kitten… guess where his favorite place still is.  Yep… I didn’t take my own advice to which I gave out 10 years before.  Meep follows AJ everywhere at his heels, just like a little puppy.  It’s the cutest thing.

His favorite toy is a fish net.meep flying

SHEBA

wpid-20150903_223503.jpgShe’s the only girl of the group.  Sheba came to us about 2 years ago, I thought she had been abandoned.  It was in the middle of winter and the temperature was due to get down to 19 degrees F, and she was hanging out on our porch.  I made her a box on the porch to keep her warm, but I thought surely she had a home.  Three nights later, she was still hanging around, and it was about to get colder.  We brought her inside and she’s been with us ever since.  I actually found out who owned her, and the “owner” and I exchanged some words (I’d like to say it was pleasant, but it wasn’t). However, since then, Sheba has never left. She’s an outside kitty, which I absolutely don’t believe in for many reasons, but I can’t change how she was raised.  She still comes inside every single night to sleep with James and I, either between our heads or she will completely take over my pillow.  She gets along with Nero, but her and Meep have to stay separated.  I don’t know why, but even after 2 years, Meep will not accept her as his sister.

Sheba and I have races to the neighborhood mailbox.  She’ll give me a nice head start, but then I say, “I’m gonna beat you.”  That’s all she needs to hear… she puts it in high speed and wins every time.  She’s actually about 13.  Her favorite toy:  Anything that’s outside, from grass, to bugs, to… well, sadly, everything.

The other members of our family include 3 angelfish and 1 otocinclus (a 5-year-old sucker fish who has survived Armageddon)… I’m not as good with fish as I am with 4-legged creatures… but that’s another story…
