Mind-Numbing

Having to be on a bike trainer is painfully mind-numbing.  I use one on XT days and because I need to build up for that 50-mile bike ride I want to accomplish this summer, you know, to celebrate turning the big 5-0 (nope, still can’t put those two numbers together… don’t want to, don’t have to).  Donna over at Running To Travel just confirmed that cycling makes one a better runner as well.  As I won’t be able to hit the trail on my bike until about July when it stops raining, I have to settle for the trainer right now (and as I said, it… is… mind-numbing):

Going for a bike ride in the great outdoors, however, is quite stimulating:

This, unfortunately, is mind-numbing:

But this is quite stimulating:

And this is positively stimulating:

Kinda stimulating too (and possibly a little cute?):

Mind-numbingly stimulating:

I think you get where I’m coming from.

AND… the song I’ve chosen for this week’s MMM is stimulating.  This post, however, is fantastically mind-numbing.

Anyway… on to the music… I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I heard that the drummer (Rick Allen) from Def Leppard had been in a serious car accident and had lost an arm. Okay, in reality, I don’t really remember what I was doing… it was the ’80s after all, but I do remember being devastated when I heard the news, thinking Def Leppard was done and/or would never be the same again.  But they came back… and with a vengeance I might add, bigger and better than before. I do actually remember seeing the following video and being awestruck, which was after that fateful accident.  Rick had learned how to adapt and improvise and succeed regardless of what life dealt him… and for that, he will forever be someone I admire.

This song has always been and will always be a mainstay on my workout playlists…

Race season is about to begin for me, with Sunday (09 April) being race #1 of 2017.  It’s going to be a fun little party with nothing but 12’s for miles and miles.  It is Seattle’s one and only Seahawks 12K Run At The Landing!  I’ll be running the 5K while James is running the 12K.  Okay, I won’t lie… I’m really hoping that a couple of the Seahawks football players come out to cheer us on.  OMG… that’s when all time goals go out the window…  “Seahawk spotted at aid-station 6K in the 12K… I’m there!!!  Doesn’t matter that I’m 0.1 miles from the finish line of the 5K!!!”

Hope you’re having a fantastical weekend!!  And for those of you racing (including my father-in-law Alan in the UK), I wish you a happy and healthy finish!!

Happy New Year!

In spite of the losses we endured most recently, it’s been a great holiday week… lots of family, lots of food, lots of love.  There was even lots of running done by one of us… okay, spoiler alert, it wasn’t me doing the running.

The 12yo child is now taller than me… that ain’t right.

Christmas Eve brought tragedy at work.  We got quite a bit of snow the day before, too much for one of the trees to handle, and it collapsed onto one of the yurts that housed a little Northern Saw-whet owl with vision problems.  She escaped.  She is fully flighted and knows how to hunt, so there is a good chance of survival for her.  Maybe the accident was, in reality, divine intervention.  Maybe her stay with us was done and it was time for her to fly and be free. (To every negative, it’s important to search for the positive. #selfpreservation)

20150220_135857.jpgChristmas Eve brought tragedy to the Seattle Seahawks as well.  They lost to Arizona.  The positive?  I was right there in the stadium to watch!  My very first ‘Hawks game! Okay… maybe not so much a positive for the team, but a huge selfish positive on my part!  🙂

This weekend has been great fun, celebrating the end of 2016.  AJ went to Leavenworth with his friend to play in the snow, and James and I brought in the New Year karaoking most of the night until it was time to watch the fireworks at the Space Needle (from the warmth of our own home, of course… far away from any craziness).

Got snow?

We have a fresh layer of snow and ice, and this coming week promises to be the coldest we’ve seen in a long time.  I don’t do snow, and it will definitely be a week of treadmill running, assuming I even run, :D.  But c’est la vie.  There is always plenty of good in life to offset the bad. That’s just the way it goes.

…Don’t you know, when you’re down

There’s just one way to go

And that’s singing

C’est la vie! C’est la vie!

That’s just the way it goes!…

Wishing you much love and happiness in 2017, no matter what life throws at you!

And The Winner Is…

Thank you so much to everyone for reading and commenting on my post about beavers and entering my little giveaway!  I received such a great response!  My hope is one day we can all understand how important beavers are to our ecosystem (not to mention they’re cute as all get out)!

So on to the important stuff… the winner!  I truly wish I could send everyone a beaver ornament, but unfortunately, there can be only one (I’ll send a wildlife calendar to the first one who can tell me what movie that line is from… no googling)!  The Child did the drawing, see the video below (which is only about a minute).  It’s amazing how much he’s grown up from last year (you can see that video here).

So if the winner could kindly contact me, I’ll get the package off to you posthaste.

Just to prove the drawing was legit, haha!

As well, a big thank you to my readers/my friends for following my blog, my running, and my life!  You are much appreciated!  (And yes, this song is on one of my running playlists, ;D)

By the way, James has posted his race recap on Tulsa… he did a great job!  You can read about that here.

Happy Birthday To The Child!

The child, otherwise known as AJ, turned a big 12 this week!  So it’s been a week of 12s and celebrations and good times!

He’s been a “12th man” since the day he was born!

To this day, he still loves to throw rocks into the water.

Officially 12!

Also, speaking of 12s… I have to give a big shout out to Mike at A Little Bit Out of Focus for the screaming great time he got at his marathon this past weekend wearing… you guessed it… bib #12!!  Congratulations Mike!!  You have found the Power of the 12!

On to the music… I had the silly idea to post AJ’s 5 favorite songs for Motivational Music Monday at 50 in 50 Marathon Quest, but once he gave me his list… ummmm… no.  Sorry child.  Ain’t no one got time for that noise!

Did you all know my boy, Michael Bublé, has a new album being released this week?!!  Oh yeah. So in honor of that little gem, I’m sharing with you his first single from said album!  Hope you enjoy just as much as I do!  It’s a snappy little ditty that features Black Thought from The Roots! (And there you go, AJ… a little rap for you anyway, hehe)

Are we having fun yet??!!  What song is making you happy this week?  Go let James know at 50 in 50!!

Sunday Ramblings

20160109_144756_001.jpg

On frozen pond… but soon to be in warm ocean! 🙂

One week from today, James and I will be running in Hawaii at the Maui Oceanfront Marathon, him the full, me the half (just in case you missed that news in every other post I’ve written for the past 3 months).  Gone will be the snow and ice… only sun and fun!  I’ll probably be mostly packed for the trip by day’s end even though we don’t leave until Friday.  I figure, hey, why not. Goodness knows I won’t be needing any of my summer clothes here anytime soon!!

20160110_101547.jpg

Our custom bibs for the race came in the mail yesterday.  James’s is because he’s running all 50 states (yes, I’m running all 50 states too, but I won’t get mine until later).  I opted for a different bib… one in honor of my big brother.  He died this past November from cancer.  He loved Maui. He got married there, and he went back every year.  I felt it was appropriate.

the streak1

As well, the streak lives on.  Yes, sometimes I only run 1 mile, other times I run more.  I like looking at the overall picture.  While I don’t train for the full-distance marathons, nor do I train to be Speedy Gonzales, I feel these runs are actually helping me to get stronger.  As I said before, I’m getting really good at running 2 miles… now if we can just switch that up to say, “I’m getting really good at running 13.1 miles!” Eh… you never know what the year is going to bring!

And in other news, the Seahawks won their football game today (so sorry if you’re from Minnesota, but hey).  If you didn’t happen to watch the game, it was unreal.  The Seahawks were leading the game 10-9.  Minnesota had the ball with less than a minute to go.  All they had to do was kick a 27-yard field goal, and the game was theirs.  We’ll just say that The Vikings did not have a good day. (Laces out, people, laces out!)  Seahawks advance in the playoffs to face the Carolina Panthers next Sunday.  The 12th Man Flag will be coming to Maui with us for a little fan support next week.  But… we’ll be in the middle of our races when the game is on, so we might miss the outcome.  Still… very exciting stuff!

Also, James wrote a great article about running apps here just in case you’re shopping around. So if you’re a technical geek (like we are), go check it out!

Hope everyone has had a great weekend!  Are you an extreme sports fan?  Did your football team play today? If you ran Disney, show off that bling!!
